There’s a new magazine in town, and it’s called Amulet: A Field Guide for Living Wise. It’s smart, sassy, and stylish, and all about one of my favorite topics: earth-wise seasonal living. I am smitten with it! And I’m happy to have contributed two articles to the current issue: one on a tarot reading for Autumn, and one on community gathering.
Here’s what the founders, MaryBeth Bonfilglio and Danielle Cohen, have to say about Amulet:
We wanted mind-blowing real + raw content all in one glorious + safe place. And what began as a love letter between friends, is now Amulet, a home + Protectress for modern sacred information in the visual, creative + writings arts.
Amulet is a vessel for simple connections. It’s a field guide to not only wise living, but a place where we can boldly say: We are PeaceKeeper & WorldShaker. We are Mother & Other. We are what casts light and digs deep into the shadow of the soil. Here is what we do.
We witness the seasons turn and the moon change shape and consciously take part in that dance. These have always been the ways of the woman, to time keep the seasons.
We honor the rhythm that rolls with the beats and meters of the Earth,+ beyond. These rhythms are meant to ease our worries, smooth our stress, and bring us back to what nourishes us: our connections to Earth, our family, our creatrix, our community.
May we pick up our shovels, rakes, seeds, candles, stones, children, pens, paintbrushes, needles, welding supplies, or fresh baked bread and truly know we are shifting words and worlds, we are shaking paradigms and patterns. We are coming together, writing our stories, making our art, doing our work, reaching out, touching what’s real. We are constantly makin’ magic, yo.
Yes. That’s right. Magic. Let’s get down with it.
Do I resonate with this? Oh my, yes I do!
In the Autumn issue, there are articles on connecting with our ancestors, and facing our grief. There are tutorials on making a fallen leaf essence, painting trees, and crafting your own Wheel of the Year timepiece. You’ll learn to read bones like an oracle, and make some fall teas and potions. There are fun, seasonal activities for kids (“witchlets”), recipes for nourishing autumn food, pretty things to covet and buy, music, and body wisdom (sex!). I am astounded at the sheer abundance that spills out of each issue like a giant cornucopia.
Like many publications today, Amulet is offered both as a digital download and as a printed copy. I’m personally thrilled to see this, as the emphasis on digital publication means that the founders are not going to have to worry about paying the printers’ bills and going out of business (yes, I remember this so well from the early days of The Beltane Papers!).
It’s in PDF format, which means it can be easily read on an iPad or tablet as well as on your computer. A digital download for one issue is $17, which may seem like a lot for a magazine, but is definitely worth the price. The beauty of the words, the design, and the imagery make my heart sing. You can also order a printed copy for $39.60 (with a digital download included).
Now — the best part! Amulet is graciously giving away one free digital download (retail: $17) of the Autumn issue to Gaian Soul readers (that’s you!). Just leave a comment, and next Wednesday, October 2nd, I’ll randomly choose one of your names out of a basket.
