Spirit Sunday: Music is a Healer

in Gratitude, Music

Craig and I saw Ruthie Foster perform at the Mt Baker Theater here in Bellingham last weekend. It was one of those rare concerts where you’re full of joy when you walk out, feelin’ glad to be alive.  I first discovered her at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival several years ago, and followed her around from stage to stage all weekend to hear her perform as often as I could.  Fell in love with her music, her style and her big warm heart.

The song Craig and I have been singing to each other all week since the concert is called “Thanks for the Joy” from her album The Truth According to Ruthie Foster. Couldn’t find a video of it, but here’s some of the lyrics.  Sounds like a gratitude practice to me!

Well I woke up early this morning
I was feeling mighty bad
And I searched my heart and I found a reason why
Instead of thinking ‘bout where I am
I was thinking ‘bout where I’ve been
And forgot to give thanks for the joy of living my life with you

Well I’m here to tell you
When my heart’s so heavy ‘bout to break in two
One thing every time brings back my smile
Well I start to count my blessings
That’s all that I need to do
And I’ve got to give thanks for the joy of living my life with you

Some days I get weary
When I’m tired of keeping on keeping on
I look around and I see my work is not done
Well I’m here this evening people
You know what I’m here to do
I’m here to give thanks for the joy of living my life with you
