An Interview with me about the Gaian Tarot

Catherine Chapman of Tarot Elements just posted an interview she did with me.  She asked great, juicy, thoughtful questions.   I think you'll enjoy reading it!

Where did the Gaian Tarot begin for you?

I had the desire to create a deck of my own back in the mid-80’s when I was deep into Goddess and Tarot studies, especially of the Motherpeace and RWS decks. But the thought of painting 78 cards was daunting. (Little did I know . . .) Later on, in the late 90’s, I went through a period of time where I let go of all my esoteric interests like tarot, astrology and ritual. I moved to a small, rural island, built a straw bale house with my husband and started a wilderness awareness course of studies — learning about the native plants and animals, going deep into the Spirit of Place.

She looked straight at me and said, “YOU have to do a Tarot deck!”

In late 2000, I was invited to be the Artist Guest of Honor at a conference in Chicago. A woman I’d never seen before walked up to my vending table on the first night. She was wearing a T-shirt decorated with a sequined version of the RWS High Priestess. She looked straight at me and said, “YOU have to do a Tarot deck!” I heard the voice of the Goddess speaking through her; it wasn’t just an offhand remark. That woman turned out to be Janet Berres, who was the founder and director of the International Tarot Society (now, sadly, defunct). Throughout the course of the weekend, people kept coming up to my table and asking “Didn’t you do a Tarot deck?” By the 12th or 13th time I heard this, I capitulated. Message received.

Thank you Catherine!

Thoughtful, sparkling comments. . .

I loved reading about your artistic journey, Joanna. The Gaian Tarot story is a fascinating one. Congrats to you and all the wonderful press your deck is getting. This is just the beginning. Hugs!

I have to say how absolutely lovely your Guardian of Water is. She reminds me of my Puerto Rican Mother. I saw her on the back of a Sagewoman magazine, and came an found you.
I have been reading tarot for 12 years and have been disheartened by the fact that finding real people in them was rare. Imagine my surprise to find my own mother! And a mermaid with an ample body and a bit of grey hair? How delightful.
Thank you, I look forward to the deck’s publication.

Tanisha, thank you. I’m so glad you recognized your mother in the Guardian of Water. I had intended for her to look Hawaiian/Polynesian, but Puerto Rican works for me! Blessings to you.
