Another Year, Another Yule Tree

in Island Life, St. Lucia, Winter Solstice, Yule

YuletreedigWe’ve planted a Yule tree around our home every year for the past seven years.  It’s lovely to look at them and think about that particular year and that particular Lucia party.  This is the weekend our tribe gathers here to celebrate “Lucia, who heralds the imminent Return of the Sun!” as my friend Helen wrote so many years ago.   The party really starts with the preparations, then gets into gear when the mermaid sisters start arriving with greens for decoration, delicious goodies to nibble on, and new songs to learn.

A few years ago, our neighbor up the hill — the same one who hosts the island lavender festival — started a small Yule tree farm.  Well, field, really.  So each year Craig, Nora (aka Sister Laughs a Lot Mermaid) and I head up the hill to choose a tree and dig it up.  Let’s hear it for microclimates — these trees are thriving down the hill at Heron House!

Congrats on your planting! That Douglas fir looks so happy!!
We also plant a tree each year, and this year we put our second tree in our new hom in Pennsylvania – a strong blue spruce from a local farm.
    Yule greetings!
