I photographed a young friend the other day as she posed for the Child of Air. I asked her to pretend she had a beautiful butterfly resting on her hand, which I’ll add of course in the final painting. I’ve never really done many portraits of children before. My challenge is to portray their innocence and sense of wonder at encountering Nature up close, without falling into sentimentality or too much sweetness. This photo was taken on the deck of my house. Do you see the red-flowering currant in the background?
