Magical Giftbringers of Yule: Saule

Nora as Saule(This is the third of four posts on the “Magical Giftbringers of Yule.”  The first one was Rozhanitsa, and the second one was St. Lucia.)

Saule is the Baltic Sun Goddess.  I learned most of what I know about her from Patricia Monaghan’s wonderful book O Mother Sun.  I wrote the following lines for a woman playing Saule to speak in a ritual or guest appearance at a Yuletide party.

The woman who portrays Saule should wear amber necklaces and a crown of gold. She carries a basket of golden apples. She can pass out butterscotch candies to the guests, which stand in for tears of amber.

Oh, you have risen early, my darling ones. Do you see the rosy sky beginning to brighten over the eastern hills? I am coming to you, my sweets. I am your beloved Saule, Mother Sun.

How I love to hear you sing your songs to me! Sometimes you sing that I am a red apple setting in the west. Or that I make my bed in an apple tree, where my sacred serpent, the zaltys, twines around my arms. In the late evening, I board my golden boat and travel beneath the world to my rising place in the east. When I am very sad, I sit in my apple orchard and weep tears of amber. But on the morning of Winter Solstice — or Kaledos, as we call it — I am reborn as my daughter the Morning Star, the year’s young sun.

I have also heard you whisper that the magical smith Kalvis forges a goblet of gold, and that it releases me from the dark of night. I charge over the mountains of dawn in my chariot drawn by two silken horses. Oh, I do love the exhilaration of the race — just as I love my children!

I shine on all of you — there is no limit to the love I have for you. Even though you tease me when you sing: Saule, you seem to be rushing! Go slower! Stay late in the sky! We have much work to do and need the extra light! Oh, my dear ones! There is always tomorrow! I will rise for you again.

Dance for me on the morning of Kaledos! Sing my songs and carry the golden apples of the sun throughout the town! Greet each other with wishes of health and prosperity — on this morning, your prayers will be answered and your wishes fulfilled, Oh my beloved ones!

Giftbringer Lucia

(This is the second of four posts on “Magical Giftbringers of Yule.”  Last week’s was Rozhanitsa.)

Well, you all know by now how much my community and I love St. Lucia, aka the Lucy Bride, the Lussibruden, Lucia Queen. Her feast day is next Monday, December 13th. We’re in a busy tizzy over here, preparing for our annual Lucia Party this coming Saturday.  We’re cleaning, doing laundry, decorating, and cooking up a storm.  Can’t wait for (once again) the party of year.

The centerpiece of the party is St Lucia’s arrival. She wears a crown of candles and passes out the lussekatter (rolls formed in the shape of the rune Gefjon, “gift”), providing sustenance for our bodies and our souls.  I wrote the lines below for Her to speak in a ritual, but in practice, our Lucia Brides have always been silent.  Yet the words are lovely . . .

Lo! on our threshold there,
White-clad, with flame-crown’d hair:
Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

I hear you singing this refrain as I enter your homes on this dark night, bearing my gifts of light for your souls and bread for your bodies. Oh, hail! Do you know me? Even my name speaks of the Light. I am Lucia, that one whose visit heralds the return of the sun.

In elder times, you called me by other names. In ancient Rome, I was Juno Lucina, midwife to the newborn sun. In the northlands, I was Freya, she of the golden necklace, bride of the Vanir. I flew across the night sky in an amber chariot drawn by my beloved cats and entered your homes before dawn. My cats came along, though mysteriously changed into nourishing cakes! You knew me too as Frigga of the hearth and home, when I sat at my spinning wheel and spun threads of sunlight to brighten the morning sky.

Betsy as St Lucia

They say of me: “Honor St. Lucy with great good cheer, and you shall have plenty for all of the year!” And it’s true! You do me honor when you gather in my name. I bring to you the gift of the gathering of friends and family, and the promise of longer days.

More than anything, I am the Lightbringer, who appears mysteriously out of the darkest night with hope and sustenance for all.

Lucia was played that year by mermaid sister Elaine Nichols (who makes the Gaian Tarot bags). The lower photo was taken of our friend Betsy when she played the role of St. Lucia in a Winter Solstice ritual some years back. Photos from the 2010 Lucia Party an be found here.)

Lucia altarI’m giving away three copies of my new eBook, “A Crown of Candles: How to Throw a Fabulous Lucia Party” !!!!

Just leave a comment below, and I will choose THREE NAMES at random this weekend. I’ll announce the winners here on Monday November 8th.  Best of luck!

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you’ve read my posts about our annual Lucia Party, like this one or this one.  Last year I asked if any of you would appreciate a “how-to” book, and you answered with a resounding “Yes!”  So here it is . . . in time for you to plan your own party, or incorporate some of the ideas into your Winter Solstice or Yule ceremonies and rituals.

Here’s what a few people have said about the eBook & companion website:

“We are in the midst of preparing a celebration about St. Lucia at Midwinter, in a series of seasonal celebrations in the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. We use A Crown of Candles in our preparations. It helps us to understand what St. Lucia is about and we are inspired by the many activities we can choose from. We love the scripts for the ‘Numinous Beings,’ especially the script of the Child of Wonder. Well written and open all to ways of life.” — Berthe van Soest, member of the team Feest van Aarde en Hemel

“You have successfully woven the Spiritual (all those carefully researched Legends and Stories)with the Practical (mouthwatering recipes and bless you for including the instructions on making the Crown of Candles!) into a Solstice Celebration Tapestry that could rightly take its place among anything already established.” — Lady North, British Columbia

“I was entranced with the video you posted last year, and thought it was a delightful way to spend an evening during the holiday season.  When I saw the eBook, I was truly impressed with its beauty and organization. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow.  There is even a sample invitation, recipes, song lists . . . I could go on. I am a fan of Waverly Fitzgerald and she is given a nod in this magnificent collection.  I imagine that my own Santa Lucia party is not far off!” — Jo-Ann S., Michigan

Thanks everybody!  Enjoy!
