Gaian Tarot Icon – The Star

Gaian Tarot Icon - Star

Mixed Media Collage / Assemblage: “The Star”
from the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert

Each Gaian Tarot Icon is one-of-a-kind. The same image and similar background papers are used in each piece. The basic design is also the same. However, each icon is unique with its own fibers, stones, and botanicals. Your icon will not look exactly like the one in the photograph.

Each icon has a secret blessing wrapped up inside the beeswax / silk cocoon. The blessing for the Star reads:  “May peace, hope, and inspiration be yours.” (If you would like your own blessing to be used inside the cocoon, just let me know. I’m happy to personalize it for you.)

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic painting is a technique dating back to Greece in the fifth century BCE. “Encaustic” is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Encaustic medium consists of a mixture of natural beeswax and damar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium is melted and applied with a brush or other tool. After it cools, each layer is reheated to fuse it to the previous layer.

My Process

I print out images from my deck, the Gaian Tarot, onto archival paper. I then tear the central image out by hand. I stain the edges with walnut ink and pastel. I create the layers of the collage with handmade papers, applying a layer of beeswax medium each time, scraping and incising each layer to create texture. I stain the layers with walnut ink, and work in gold leaf and gold foil between the layers of beeswax. I create a beeswax and fiber “cocoon” that holds a secret blessing inside. Finally I attach botanicals, found treasures, fibers, and the blessing cocoon to the piece.

I fell in love with beeswax collage work for its luminous transparency and the mystery that unfolds as each piece is created.

Every piece of art I make is an offering and a talisman. You can read more about my magical and intentional process here.

Care

These collages are extremely archival, but as with any fine art, care should be given to them. There should be no fear of the work melting in normal household conditions. The wax and resin will not melt unless exposed to temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. It is not a good idea to hang or display the collage in direct sunlight.
