Spring Slowly Unfolding

Our faces turned white by the bright sunlight!

Yesterday Craig and I went in search of signs of Spring in the nearby woods, and sadly did not find any skunk cabbage yet in bloom (one of my favorite signs of spring!). But the sun deliciously appeared, and we bathed our faces in its warmth.

I went to write a blog post about our walk, but discovered a similar blog post I wrote at this time last year, “In Search of Lady Spring,” which is one of my all-time favorite posts.

It begins:

Here in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, March begins in rain.

And in snow.

Yesterday I counted three kinds of snowflakes: big, fat, fluffy ones; thin watery ones; and hard pellets of hail.

Today I woke to a chickadee’s call.

I hear a faint whisper:  “Persephone returns!”

They say that in Seattle (a hundred miles to the south), the salmonberry is in bloom, snowberry is leafing out, and the yellow lanterns of skunk cabbage are rising from the primordial mud. On the island, I’m told, the red-flowering currant is beginning to blossom.

But not here.

Click here to keep reading (and see the lovely photos and illustrations!).

Meanwhile . . . Wednesday March 6th is the last day for the early bird price on my e-course, Gaian Soul Practices for Spring, that starts next Sunday the 10th.

In this session, we will emphasize nature journaling (with camera, drawing, and/or writing), on finding a “secret spot” outside, and closely observing the seasonal changes in your own (proverbial) backyard.

We’re also going to study some of the Maiden Goddesses and Goddesses of Spring, along with the myths of the dying and resurrected gods who were precursors to the Christian story we all know so well.

As always, there are art projects, nature practices, spiritual practices, and journaling prompts that arrive in your inbox each day.

If you’ve ever longed to experience the archetypal season of rebirth and resurrection in a mindful, creative, nature-based way — this may be the course for you.

I’d love to have you join me and a warm circle of lovely souls who have already gathered to walk this path together!

"Woodlight" by Cate Kerr, www.beyondthefieldsweknow.org

January is one of my favorite months, probably because it’s my birthday month. But I also love the sense of potential that permeates the month, and is reflected in the pristine snowfall (if we’re lucky enough to experience snow).

If you’re like me, you’ve completed your year-end review, done a tarot reading (or two or three) for the New Year, and figured out your tarot Year Card. Perhaps you’ve chosen a word or theme song to guide you through the year.

Two of AirOr perhaps you’re still deeply listening, like the woman in the Two of Air, so you can “proceed at the pace of guidance.”*

The holy-day of Candlemas, or Imbolc, will be here in just a couple of weeks. For those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the time when Spring begins to emerge — oh so slowly! — from the belly of Winter.

The Celts saw the beginning of this tide, February 1st, as the first day of the season of Spring. This may or may not resonate for you, depending on where you live. We may see signs of spring here in the Pacific Northwest, although February often brings the worst snowstorms and floods of the season. Elsewhere, Winter may be holding fast and fierce, and for some, Winter may not have even yet arrived.

Still, no matter the weather, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere the hours of daylight are growing. The metaphorical babe born at Winter Solstice is now a child, stretching her arms and standing on wobbly legs like a young fawn.

It is the early morning of the year, and we are beginning to awaken from our long winter’s sleep. It’s time for us to emerge from the dreamtime, just as our animal friends are cautiously emerging from hibernation or dormancy.

The awakening of the land from its winter sleep is, of course, a metaphor for the awakening of our own souls.

We will celebrate full-blown resurrection and renewal at Spring Equinox, but this midway point between Solstice and Equinox is a bit more tender. It’s a time when we cleanse and purify ourselves in preparation for renewal. We consider our commitment to our own True Paths, and prepare to make vows and pledges when the holy-day arrives on February 1st.

awakeningIf you’d like to do some deep work to prepare for Candlemas/Imbolc this year, here are some questions I offer in the first week of my Candlemas ecourse. Consider these questions, and answer them in your journal. (Remember: First thought, best thought. Write without stopping, and without editing or censoring yourself.)

You might like to turn up a tarot card for each question, to ignite and inspire your answers.

• What is it that I am meant to do in this lifetime?

• How can I come into alignment with my soul’s calling?

• What new hope or seed is emerging for me, out of the depths of winter?

• What is my own True Path, and how can I make a commitment to it?

• What kind of a pledge can I make to help with the healing of Mama Gaia?

Gentle Reminder: Last Call for Early Bird Price

snowdropsJust a reminder that the next 5-week session of my Gaian Soul Seasonal Practices, Candlemas: Prelude to Spring, starts next Sunday, January 20, and tomorrow January 16th, is the last day for the Early Bird Price.

During this course, we will honor Brigid, the triple goddess of smithcraft (think transformation), healing and creative inspiration. We’ll cleanse ourselves in her holy well, and we’ll be set ablaze by her creative fire. We’ll renew our vows and dedicate ourselves to our own True Paths.

Nature activities, art & photography projects, and — oh yes! — there will be tarot exercises too!

I hope you’ll consider joining me and a group of lovely folks already gathering for this Candlemas circle.

All the details are here.

The New Year Slowly Unveils Her Face

by Joanna Powell Colbert on January 11, 2013 · 2 comments

in Classes & Workshops, Wheel of the Year

It seems to me that the New Year unfolds in increments, beginning at All Hallows and continuing through Candlemas.

She comes in quietly, like a ghost on All Hallow’s Eve. She unveils Herself a little more each day through the season of darkness, pausing to mark the birth of the Sun at Solstice, feeling the radiant warmth of the dawn’s rays.

And we enter the deep dark with Her, dreaming, resting, incubating. We look back at the year gone by and note our successes and our disappointments. We rejoice with our community at the Return of the Sun.

But the days are still dark, still short, still cold. Secular New Year’s Eve and Day comes and goes.

As the month of January unfolds, we will find ourselves desiring to cleanse ourselves, to eat austerely after our holiday feasting, to move our bodies, to wipe the slate clean and bring something new into manifestation.

And this holy longing grows. What do we want to do differently in the coming year? How do we want to be different? We carry these questions in our hearts into the cold January days, and we mark the daylight that grows longer each day, oh so infinitesimally.

Soon it will be time for Candlemas at the beginning of February — a time for initiation, for pledges, and for promises. And the Old Woman of Winter will make way for the Maiden of Spring.

Most of us who live outside of mainstream culture no longer make resolutions, knowing that they come from a place of lack and often from shame. And they rarely work.

But like the Seeker setting out on the path with the goal of reaching the top of the Great Mountain, we need to have an idea of where we want to go, if we ever want to get there. We Seekers walk the path of deepening and transformation. We make conscious choices by creating maps, making plans, and setting goals. At the same time, we need to be guided, to be nudged by intuition, signs and synchronicities.

“Here,” the New Year whispers. “Follow this path, follow the lead of the swallows and butterflies . . .”

And we lean into Mystery.

Throughout November, December, and January, as the New Year unfolds, we walk a continuum between making conscious plans to following the promptings of the Spirit, back and forth. We need both, in order to bring our visions and dreams into manifestation.

I have found that it is absolutely necessary for me to map out my plans for the coming year, to set goals and create strategies. But I rely on intuition and the guidance of the Spirit to help me make those plans.

And I keep myself open to the winds of change.

Registration open for Candlemas ecourse

With today’s New Moon in Capricorn, we have yet another opportunity to consider our intentions for the New Year, leading up to making pledges to our own True Path at Imbolc/Candlemas. Registration is now open for my “Gaian Soul Seasonal Practices for Candlemas” e-course. We start on Sunday, January 20th.

If you’re longing to make room in your daily life for mindful creative expression, and to align yourself with the rhythms of nature in the deep Midwinter (when Spring is still a promise), this course may just be right for you.

We’ll be working with the themes of Emergence, Dedication, Cleansing and Purification, Inspiration, and Creative Fire. We’d love to have you join us.

Last year at this time, I launched my contemplative, creative, seasonal e-courses with the Yuletide / Midwinter session. Already the Wheel has come full circle, and a lovely group of folks are gathering once again to practice self-care and nourish their inner lives during the crazy-busy holiday season. Almost half the people who took the [...]

How to Make A Spirit Doll: Step 7 (Name Her, Charge Her, Bless Her)

October 20, 2012

When you feel like your doll is done (and at some point, you just have to declare her “done” or you’ll keep fussing with her forever), create sacred space. Offer her up to the Divine, and charge her with the energy of your intention. Then name her.  Perhaps you already know her name: “She Who [...]

How to Make A Spirit Doll: Step 5 (Face & Crown)

October 18, 2012

Now that you’re are well on your way to having your doll finely dressed, it’s time to attach the doll’s face to her “head,” to add hair, and create a crown or headdress of some kind. The terra cotta faces that Lyn Belisle makes have holes in them, so you can easily tie the face [...]
