I’m Joanna Powell Colbert and this is Gaian Soul.
I’m an artist, author, teacher, mentor, and retreat host who encourages lovers of Mama Gaia to lead purposeful, creative, and soulful lives.
My spiritual philosophies and the wisdom I share with this community have been a lifetime in the making.
I’ve been walking the path of Goddess Spirituality since the early 1980s, and I have spent this time exploring and developing a deeply satisfying, creative, earth-based spirituality that grounds me while connecting me to the Sacred Feminine in my everyday life. My practice gives me a deep, meaningful connection to the earth through direct, uncomplicated daily action and a powerful connection with the community I have cultivated both online and in my personal life.
I was honored to be recently named by SageWoman magazine as one of the Wisdom Keepers of the Goddess Spirituality Movement.
I teach e-courses and and workshops around the country on earth-centered spirituality, Goddess spirituality, manifesting your dreams, Gaian Soul Seasonal Practices for the Wheel of the Year, creativity as a devotional path, and using tarot as a tool for inner guidance and self-exploration.
Twice each year, near Spring Equinox and Autumn Equinox, I bring together groups of extraordinary women at Gaian Soul Retreats held at Aldermarsh Retreat Center on Whidbey Island, Washington.
The sacred art of tarot has long been an integral part of my spiritual practice.
I picked up my first tarot deck in 1970 and started studying in earnest in the early 1980s. It has been a faithful tool for guidance and inner exploration ever since. Over a nine year period in the early 2000s, I devoted myself to developing the concept, art, and writing for my tarot cards and companion book, The Gaian Tarot. This deck combines my love of symbolic, archetypal art with the mysteries of the natural world. It was published by Llewellyn Worldwide in September 2011, preceded by a deluxe Limited Edition of 1000 decks in March 2010. Within a year, 70% of the Limited Editions had already found happy homes (though there are still a few copies left!).
As an extension of my tarot practice and for further exploration of the Gaian Tarot, I served as host and guide of the membership site Gaian Tarot Circle for four years, which I created as a community study circle centered on the Gaian Tarot. I now host the Gaian Soul Circle, which is place to explore not only tarot but all kinds of earth-centered practices.
My connection with the Sacred Feminine includes regular creative expression through Goddess-inspired artwork, which I love to share with this community.
I sell my colored-pencil paintings and mixed media pieces as originals and limited edition prints, and Amber Lotus Publishing Co. calls me one of “the most accomplished and well-loved artists in the Goddess-spirit community.”
In addition to my broader connections to this wonderful community I have cultivated, I relish the one-on-one time I am able to spend with clients via Gaian Tarot Readings or private consultations in my Magical Tarot Dreams Sessions. I am dreaming a mentoring program into being, too.
I am dedicated to the Ocean Mother in all Her guises and am a lover of Mama Gaia, the Old Wild Mother. I’m a Capricorn Sun, Taurus Moon, and Taurus Rising.
I live on a small island in the Salish Sea near Bellingham, Washington with my husband, musician Craig Olson. I am nourished by the island community, both human and non-human, and go for daily walks by one of Mama Ocean’s loveliest bays. (And, speaking of family, my granddaughter Gracie is the most beautiful child in the whole, entire world!)
If you seek a deeper connection with the earth or a more regular, expressive outlet for your own creative gifts, you can work with me in a variety of ways, from one-on-one consultations to e-courses or group retreats.
I’d also love for you to partake in my newsletter, where I share articles on earth-centered spirituality, creativity, personal transformation, and tarot – plus notices about my e-courses and events, sales on my artwork, and other goodies.
I do hope that you’ll find a home within our community of mystics, healers, and creatives! Our shared conversation will be richer for having you.
