A Tribe of Swans

SwansmtnLast Friday on our way out of town, my mermaid sister DragonSong and I stopped the car in the middle of the road, floored by the sight of this field of feasting swans.  Ooooooh, so lovely, these winter visitors.  Later, during the retreat, another sister shared that she had felt like an ugly duckling her entire life until she found her tribe, and discovered she was a swan among swans.  This photo’s for you, Sister Sophia Mermaid.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many swans out of the water. What wonderful photos.

Sister Joanna Mermaid, we see swans on the rivers here, but I don’t think I have ever seen them feeding on dry land. Thank you for beautiful imagery and a vivid reminder that springtime IS on its way.

Cate, around here the swans are winter visitors, and when they leave it’s a sign of spring! :-) I’m not sure if they are Tundra Swans or Trumpeter Swans, but they will head back north to the Canadian Arctic or Alaska once it gets too warm here.
It’s a fairly common sight (though still breathtaking!) to see them feeding in the fields in winter. Every year though, another farm becomes a housing tract. There’s one going in not too far from this field. When all the fields are gone, what will become of the swans?
